WARNING: Disturbing Visual Images

My first paper, and incidentally the most difficult module I have ever taken to date, wasn’t technically a disaster, but bad enough to sound off the sirens of desperation. Its a disgusting module called Infectious Diseases. To my reckoning, it should be called “The Memorising of Randomly Spelt Organisms with Accompanying Grotesque Images”. With over 70 names like Nattrasia mangifera (Scytalidium dimidiatum), Paracoccidioidomycosis, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiensi, Clyclospora cayetanensis… you get my drift. Its like randomly picking out scrabble tiles from a bag and trying to form poorly-conceived words. Though I think pharmacology is equally bad… (Imfliximab, Rifampicin, Olimizumab, etc…)

Anyway since tomorrow’s paper is an open book Ecology examination, I took the liberty to extract some of the most nefarious, repulsive and nauseating pictures for your viewing pleasure. I hope i don’t get sued for copy right… Click on more to see

*Disclaimer: the following contain disturbing visual images. Viewer’s discretion is STRONGLY advised.*

In no particular order of disgustingness, I present to you a glimpse of my module…

Hepatic (Liver) Obstruction caused by the over growth of Ascaris lumbricoides.

Ascaris lumbriciodes, or roundworm, crawling out of the nasal passage and mouth from a young patient. These worms are capable of tunneling their way out of the intestines and into various organs such as the heart, the lungs and even the brain.

After treatment with the anti-helminthic drug, this child expelled a bolus of roundworms, evading a potentially fatal eventuality.

A palm of an infant infected with Staphylococcus aureus. This symptom is known as the Scalded Skin Syndrome where the epidermolytic toxins have exfoliated her skin.

Staphylococcus aureus may also cause boils to be formed on its host, also known as Carbuncles.

Fungal pathogens have eaten into the face of this poor elderly in a condition known as Rhinosporidiosis.

These 2 photographs depicts unfortunate victims of Mucormycosis, caused by fungal pathogen Mucor and its related species, where much of their faces have been eaten up by the fungi.

Unlike the previous examples, these 2 patients’ facial disfigurement isn’t a result  of fungal infections. Rather, it is caused by Leishmania tropica, a protozoan parasite. This parasite is spread via sandfly bites, and apart from causing Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (seen here), it also causes subcutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis.

This is another disease caused by another helminthic worm, Trichuris trichuria. Their proliferation in the perianal mucosa has caused rectal prolaspe (ass turns inside out) of this patient.

This unfortunate victim had an deep opportunistic infection of Streptococcus pyogenes, resulting in necrotising fasciitis – where much of his skin dies.

This baby is suffering from meningococcal rash which results in skin necrosis (necrosis=death). Unless treated, neonatal infection by Neisseria meningitidis is fatal.

This neonate (baby just borned) is suffering from hydrocephalus (water in the brain) as a result of Congenital Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Cats are definitive hosts for this parasite.

Guinea worms, or Dracunculus medinensis, can clearly be seen slowly wringling its way out of its host skin. A common treatment is to wind the worm around a stick as it slowly (a few cm a day) makes it way out. However, as adults can measure a meter long, this process may take days or even weeks.

This victim is suffering from Eumycetoma, where his subcutaneous tissue is infected by tropical saprophytic fungi.

Another unfortunate infection of the leg, this patient is suffering from Chromoblastomycosis. Pigmented fungi in the soil, such as Fonsecaea, Phialophora and Cladosporium may cause this disease.

Not all helminthic worm infection are utterly gross. This is a simple infection by parasitic pinworms Enterobius vermicularis. The typically cause Pruritus ani or itchy ass.

An autopsy shows the megacolon and megaoesophagus of the victim who yielded to American typanosomiasis, also known as Chagas’ Disease. Note the size of the organs. Typanosoma cruzi is spread by biting arthropods, specifically, the kissing bug.

Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungi, may cause nail infection in some individuals.

Other fungi, such as Blastomyces dermititidis, may cause Blastomycosis in regions such as America, Africa and Asia.

The protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica, has caused amoebiasis of the gentinals.

Alright, that is all I have managed to dig up with the limited time I had. I hope you have enjoyed viewing these puke-inspiring pictures as much as I have enjoyed collating them. Notice that most of the gross disfiguring infections are caused by fungal pathogens, protozoan parasites or helminthic worms. Anyway, its time for supper, or rather MY dinner. I hope you guys are well enough to have yours :)

  1. ewww, I feel like I’m getting infected by just looking at the pictures….

  2. this is silly really

  3. Very interesting review. the hydrocephalus neonate has some similarities with Roswell.

  4. this is anything but silly. the guy with a hole in his face lives in southern California in the city thousand oaks (Mucormycosis), he had leukemia, then got diagnosed with blood cancer, during cemo he got this disease and they surgically removed his face lost his left eye, nose, a bunch of bone and part of his mouth. I feel lucky to be alive right now with all my faculties fully functional all thanks to God.

  5. we’ve worked with some of these bacterias and fungi in my microbiology class; i never realized how serious the infections they cause are. thank god i ALWAYS wash my hands!

  6. it is nice viewing the types of parasite causing infections ,however sad to those who have it

  7. But it`s very good for those that needs it

  8. My englis is not to good, but i´ll like to say that this pictures are great! i was tired to read from them only on books and not seen pictures of real cases!

  9. I think a lot of people should realize how bless they are compared to the people affected by this. This teaches you to value your life and think before complaining about something or doing something stupid that will just lessen your life like drugs and alcohol.

  10. a que nojo

  11. i think i have worms!

  12. I HATE THIS PINWORMS ARE INOYYING

  13. This is absolutely fascinating! I am talking a parasitology course right now and have already taken microbiology through two different university departments and every time I learn about a new organism I can’t help but look up pictures of what horrors they cause. I couldn’t have come up with something more disgusting if I tried. I applaud your masterful gut-wrenching techniques!

  14. the human being is weak and the amount of danger that we are exposed to is alaming is people preserved hygine and followed asystem of life that expounds all dangers its possible that these deseases will not over come any one. read the Quran and sahih bukhari and sahih muslim for further elaboration.

  15. This is actually really cool because I just learned about all of this in med school and now I’ll definitely remember them better.

  16. You know, we learned about these nematodes witout seeing the pictures. Those living witout these nematodes should realy be greatful to God. Personal hygien “it’s ewww when people live witout it”

  17. learning these in med school just isn’t the same without these gut-turning pictures. I can’t believe I ever walked in grass barefoot or swam in lakes!

  18. thats disgusting..

  19. i think i have pinworms!
    HELP!!!!

  20. very disturbing images indeed, however would be more resourseful as to input some sort of treatment and possible medicine to counteract these diseases.

  21. Subhanallah….
i thank to God for my lucky

  22. nasty motherfucking shit is what the fuck this is fuck this fuck that fuck u nasty fucking prick fuck ur mom to bitch fuck cunt ass shit fuck dog queer

  23. shit piss fucker cocksucker motherfucker shitface fardingpiece off ass

  24. I don’t think all that cursing is necessary. You must have a limited vocabulary! Anyway, interesting pictures….pretty gross but real nonetheless. Thanks for the info:-)

  25. Very fascinating.

  26. can’t imagine how a small – small creatures can caused something horrible like that…

  27. those poor babies, the adults, I can deal with, but those poor little babies, it’s such a shame.

  28. Fascinating. Thank you for sharing. Will be starting a project soon as a Microbiologist identifying some pathogenic organisms that cause these terrors. Great info!

  29. Very interesting, tough to see, but educational. Thanks for sharing your photos. Needed to have the visual to better describe to staff.

  30. Que mal por la gente que sufre de esto, nunca se lo desearia a nadie es muy feo y no lo digo por experiencia propia (gracias a dios) pero supongo que la higiene es uno de los factores mas importantes en estos casos

  31. dude this is soooooooo disgusting

  32. eww i feel blessed right now

  33. i was looking up chin rashes in children, boy did i get more than i bargained for!

  34. I had pinworms when I was 9. In Michigan living on a farm it happens. No big deal. My mom gave me 6 drops of carosene in a teaspoon with sugar and orange juice to rid the taste and those suckers were dead in hours. Im 35 and very healthy so no worries its all good.

  35. I was searching for worms in dogs and found this! And I complain when I get a mosquito bite!

  36. I have never, EVER masturbated so hard for so long. Thanks for the great read.

  37. i am soooo happy i dont have this i am going to the hospital to be tested my friend just died from it and i am making sure i dont have it R.I.P ANA IRIS CORTEZ you are greatly missed and we wont forget you

  38. It’s too bad that pre-med and medical school students aren’t exposed to the infectious organisms’ destructive strengths “in the flesh” as it were. Biology is a fascinating subject. Where does one draw the line between “learning life-histories of all organisms”, and a vouyeuristic malaise that attracts and repulses simultaneously?

  39. thank gad for health

  40. Doing a project in Bio. (highschool) and found this, Amazing yet terrible. It is a good wake up call for people that think they have it bad.

  41. I was wondering if you happen to have any interesting x-ray, ct, or mri photos being that I am in school to be an x-ray tech and am trying to decide on a pathology report. I have found some pics but maybe you could give me some ideas on some websites.

  42. These depictions of various parasitic diseases, while graphic, are indicative of the difficulties faced by those living in poor nations. I encourage people everywhere to pursue studies in the healthcare fields. Then, be sure to give of your time to help those less fortunate than yourselves with organizations like Doctors without borders. Helping one another is pretty much why we’re here.

  44. ohh no………..

  45. awwwwwwww…. dats sad i feel bad 4 those ppl?!!! ppl listen good dats not not us??!!!!! Pray 4 these ppl?!!

  46. Jeez, that was really hard to look at. I’m going to go and wash my hands, sink, shower, dog, keyboard, car, etc…

  47. :XXXXXXXXXx
and i have contact with this bacterias and worms every day
never saw such things.. they are probably EXTREME cases

  48. OH MY GOODNESS! I want to say thank you for the education. I had no idea of such parasites, and although somewhat frightened of traveling beyond my own yard, knowledge is a good thing. Good work.

  49. I teach medical parasitology, but I did not know parasites are so ruthless. The photographs depress me.More disgusting are the slangs used by a person who does not know that he has been saved by GOD.He must be thankful to God instead of using SLANG.

  50. mah fucka.. thas is not enjoying.. we just had a close look of the consequence when u u get those fucking thing on u mother fucker…

  51. together for better health.
    together for world without infections
    thanx for these pictures

  52. we must act together for better health.
iam sad to listen tha bad news coming from zimbabwah .
thousands of people infected with colera there.
you friend omaya alguran from the Hashmite Kingdom of Jordan

  53. immunosuppression FTL…runaway fungal infections are silly gross.

i have always remembered ascaris lumbricoides from that very picture. to me, it looks as if someone has dumped a box of chow mein on some kids LUMBaR(icoides) spine whereupon the noodles rolled down the crack of their ASS(caris) landing on the exam table. leaving us with ASS(caris) LUMBaR(icoides).

  54. gross

  55. Why are you people thanking some sort of God? If your God does exist he made these parasites and these people suffer. Fucking idiots, don’t try and go for the science fields your just a blight upon society.

  56. I wanna be a doctor, and now i see it’ll be little difficult. but dreams r dreams, we must follow’em.

  57. God is beyond our understanding, but not beyond our imagination. People are just fragile specks of dust, as is this planet. In the meantime we have each other, and if so blessed, the opportunity to comfort another soul. Those that can acquire knowledge are also blessed. Use your Imagination, seek Knowledge, gain Understanding, find God, and find a cure for worms!

  58. Man eats plants animals and fish.
Virus , worms and maggots eats man.
    All life eats life.
    Food for thought!

  59. My god. It is a real site!.

  60. I also felt like i was being infected just looking at these… It’s a real eye opener. I can’t believe such things exist. God forbid! I feel like I’m gonna have to live in a bubble from now on!! thanx alot dude NIGHTMARES!

  61. Wow, i also read somewhere that almost all humans have pinworms. Pretty disgusting to think that everytime I scratched my ass at night, I may have been eating pinworm eggs and shit for breakfast…. DEEEEELICIOUS!

  62. I’ve been reading these comments and been wondering why they were thanking God. If you’re studying a medical science field or something remotely related, how could you point fingers at God? Did “God” do these horrible things to these victims who happened to be born into poor health care? Stop thanking God and start thanking the Government and colleagues for providing the research for your shots and checkups.

And most of all thank civilized society.

  63. Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. :) Cheers! Sandra. R.

  64. some says “the less you know the better”, but if in this case i want to know more .. on how they are able to invade your body, how to fight them, awe my goshy golly

  65. YUMMY!, I fancy a big hanburger now.

  66. Disgusting indeed – but we need sites like these to show us the appalling potentiality of natural selection and the ubiquity of human suffering. Come to think of it, though: how on earth can evolutionists explain the fortuitous appearancce and gradual development of say, of Ascaris or Wuchereria Bancrofti? Isn’t their existence a magnificent vindication of Creationism and the triumph of a grotesque diety who is sadistic and brutally amoral? One recalls that it was the existence of parasitic wasps that caused Darwin to begin to doubt the possibility of any benevolent creator. Or, as the English politician Randolph Churchill put it, “Isn’t God a sh*t?”
